Media advisory: Engineering-science conference

"Expanding your Horizons in Science and Mathematics," a daylong conference aimed at improving awareness of careers in science and technology among girls in grades seven-nine, takes place Saturday, Nov. 12, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

The event is set for 9:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the SIUC Student Center.

About 300 girls from all over Southern Illinois will have opportunities to work with equipment such as microscopes, dental tools and aviation technology. It is a hands-on event designed to kindle interest in such areas and to give the participants contact with women who work professionally in those fields.

Some titles of the various workshops scheduled include "Unmasking Microscopic Mysteries," "What's Making my Pet Sick?" and "Tooth or Consequences." Other activities focus on robotics, geology, chemistry and ecology, among others.

Dozens of volunteers from SIUC and around the area work together to make this annual event possible.

Reporters and photographers are welcome to cover the conference. For more information, contact the SIUC Department of Mathematics at 618/453-5302 or visit http://www.math.siu.edu/eyh/EYH-Page.html.
