Effort raising funds for breast cancer research

by Paula M. Davenport

CARBONDALE, Ill. - - Yogurt lovers on and off-campus can join a Southern Illinois University Carbondale initiative that provides big bucks for breast cancer research.

Staff members at the SIUC Student Recreation Center are leading a local "Save Lids to Save Lives" project, sponsored by Yoplait yogurt.

From now through Dec. 10, folks may drop off or mail clean pink foil lids from Yoplait yogurt containers to the SIUC Student Recreation Center, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Mailcode # 6717, Carbondale, Ill., 62901.

For every pink lid it receives, Yoplait donates 10 cents to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Since its inception seven years ago, the campaign has generated $14 million for breast cancer research.

The recreation center staff launched the program in memory of its late assistant director Kathleen A. "Kathy" Guilfoyle, who worked in the Office of Intramural Recreational Sports from 1982 until she succumbed to breast cancer last year.

For more information, call the recreation center at 618/453-1263.

The campaign kicked off this month, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
