Register now for the 34th annual “Conference on Teaching Mathematics”
CARBONDALE, Ill. — There’s a trick to making math understandable and helping people comprehend and learn it. The 34th annual Conference on Teaching Mathematics is full of valuable information about doing just that for teachers, college students and anyone with an interest in math.
The conference, coordinated by Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Conference and Scheduling Services, is set for Feb. 21 at the Hancock Conference Center on the campus of John A. Logan College in Carterville.
Numerous experts participating
Nerida Ellerton and Ken Clements, internationally known mathematics teacher educators at Illinois State University, will headline the speaker presentations. They will lead participants in a series of activities designed to illustrate how to make school algebra interesting, understandable and meaningful. They will provide simple equipment and materials to enable each table to join in the demonstration.
In all, participants can choose from 30 different sections to attend during the three main sessions, in addition to the keynote address.
Other speakers include:
- Jackie Murawska, Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) president.
- Annie Forrest, ICTM president-elect.
- George Reese, ICTM past-president.
- Numerous other ICTM colleagues and classroom teachers from across the state.
The conference begins with a continental breakfast at 8 a.m. and wraps up at 2 p.m. The early registration deadline is Feb. 14.
Pre-kindergarten through grade 14 teachers will find the conference particularly helpful in giving them key insights to successfully teach mathematics. The $85 cost covers a continental breakfast, refreshments during breaks, all conference materials and the luncheon.
Full-time pre-service students can participate for a greatly reduced fee. Students should contact Jerry Becker at 618/453-4241 for student registration information. Retired teachers have complementary registration.
The deadline to sign up is Feb. 19 but the cost is $10 higher after Feb. 14.
