Ibsen classic "Lady from the Sea" to premiere at McLeod TheaterTheatergoers may enjoy an early holiday treat when a "Lady from the Sea" rolls into McLeod Theater in early December. A Henrik Ibsen classic, the play explores " ... the story of a woman who has to choose between a stifling marriage to a decent, but uninteresting man, and her inexplicable passion for an old love, a recently returned 'stranger' from the sea," according to program notes. SIUC's Rebecca Fishel Bright will direct. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, Dec. 3-6, and a closing 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Dec. 7. Ticket are $11 adults, $9 for those over 60, $6 for students and children and discounts available for groups of 10 or more. School of Social Work to host gerontology workshop on Dec. 5SIUC's School of Social Work will host an upcoming half-day workshop for anyone employed or interested in the field of gerontology. The session will run from 9 a.m. to noon, Friday, Dec. 5, in the Dunn-Richmond Economic Development Center. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. The workshop will outline some of the common signs and behaviors associated with mental health issues in older adults. Other topics will include depression, Alzheimer's disease and ways to test mental fitness as people age. Cost to attend is $50; full-time students get in for $10. SIUC student's documentary film explores Middle Eastern conflictSIUC film student Hilla Medalia will screen and answer questions about her powerful, 45-minute documentary "Daughters of Abraham" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, in the Life Science III Auditorium (room 1059). Admission is free. It follows a 17-year-old Israeli girl who happened to be doing her family's Sabbath meal shopping in a Jersusalem grocery when 18-year-old Ayat al-Akrhas of Palestine walked in and activated an explosive belt around her waist.
Dozens of dolls on display at the University MuseumMore than 70 dolls are on exhibit at the University Museum as part of a graduate student display by Timothy Taylor of Zeigler. An MPA-museum emphasis student, Taylor is particularly close to this exhibit because the dolls belong to his mother, Marguerite Taylor of Bloomington, Ind. Dream Dolls showcases dolls for adults, dolls too nice to be played with, but the dream dolls of children nevertheless. The dolls have been arranged into eight categories: mother and children dolls, childhood dolls, a tea party, bride dolls, the royals, Norman Rockwell dolls, movie star dolls, Shirley Temple, fairy tale dolls, and dolls of the original 13 colonies. The exhibit at SIUC's University Museum runs through Dec. 13. Visitors will have an opportunity to meet Mrs. Taylor at a holiday open house on Saturday, Dec. 6, from 1-4 p.m. Museum hours for the rest of the fall semester are Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday-Monday, 1-4 p.m. The museum will be closed Nov. 22-Dec. 1 for the Thanksgiving break. The museum is closed during intersession, Dec. 14-Jan. 17. Annual holiday craft sale set for Dec. 4-6 at Student CenterLooking for that unique, personal gift that can't be found anywhere else? The 25th annual Student Center Holiday Craft Sale is just the place. The three-day event, Dec. 4-6, will feature candles, wreaths, glass ornaments, jewelry, hats, scarves, quilts, gift baskets, art prints, woodworking, pottery and soap along with other handmade items by regional artisans. The craft sale also features the work of SIUC students in metalsmithing and glassblowing. Craft sale hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 4, and Friday, Dec. 5, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, and will be located in the first floor Hall of Fame area and the International Lounge area on the second floor. Mantovani's Christmas concerts are rich in the size and variety of their offerings: big and dramatic (ballet selections by Tchaikovsky), festive and fun ("Santa's Sleigh Ride"), devotional ("Ave Maria"), humorous ("March of the Toys") and traditional ("The Great Songs of Christmas Suite"). Women artists invited to enter juried exhibit at museumWomen artists from Southern Illinois are welcome to enter a juried exhibit that will brighten the University Museum this coming winter. The display, "Sampler of Women in the Arts 2004," will run Feb. 6 through March 17. The exhibit will serve both as an artistic component of and a beautiful setting for a March 17 benefit gala that helps fund women's scholarships at SIUC. To have their work considered, artists must send slides or photos of up to three pieces in painting, drawing, printmaking, collage, fiber arts or photography by Monday, Dec. 1. The actual works must have been completed within the past 24 months, be able to be wall mounted, measure less than six feet in any direction and weigh 50 pounds or less.
