Ecumenical ministry celebrates its 60th anniversary
An ecumenical ministry, based at the edge of the Southern Illinois University Carbondale campus, is about to celebrate its 60th anniversary with a diverse series of uplifting, free events from Sunday, Nov. 30, through Saturday, Dec. 6. University Christian Ministries (UCM) grew from an early 1940s insistence that collegians develop positive values in addition to mastering academics. To celebrate the evolution and longevity of the ministry, UCM will host a weeklong silent art auction, free luncheons with artists, music, receptions, a silent meditation event, a ceramics workshop and a get-together before Carbondale's Lights Fantastic Parade. Events will take place at UCM's home, the Interfaith Center (913 S. Illinois Ave.) a well-known contemporary wooden building at the corner of South Illinois and Grand avenues. "The campus ministry and the building were known for 33 years as the Student Christian Foundation," explains current, veteran director Hugh Muldoon. "Today, it is an all-inclusive center, as evidenced by the eight flags that fly in front of the building. In fact, when it was founded in 1943, it was the first interracial campus ministry in the Midwest." Currently, the center is also a meeting place for many groups, including Quakers, Buddhists, students from a variety of other countries and groups devoted to spiritual exploration, peace and justice. And the Jewish Hillel Foundation, the Southern Illinois Center for a Sustainable Future, the Student Environmental Center and the Great Lakes Conserve Our Ocean Legacy Campaign all operate from offices in the building. "Every campus needs a progressive religious presence," says Muldoon. "People of different faiths need to learn about each other to survive in today's incredibly interdependent world. "We encourage everyone to visit during our weeklong celebration," he adds. For more information, e-mail Muldoon at huju@Midwest.net or call him at the UCM office, 618/549-7387.
