Applications available for Marlene Rotbart Matten Academic Excellence Award

The Women's Studies program is accepting applications for the Marlene Rotbart Matten Academic Excellence for Nurses Endowed Award. The award, in its fourth year, is in memory of Marlene Rotbart Matten, a nurse at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

While working full-time as director of education and raising a family of four children, she earned her master's and doctoral degrees at SIUC. After receiving her degrees, she became director of education and planning at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Her education and nursing skills had a major impact far beyond the region and helped innumerable area residents.

The winner of the $1,000 award will be announced at University Honors Day, April 4. The application deadline is Dec. 5.

Among the award requirements is the female applicant has a valid R.N. degree, and be enrolled in an approved master's or doctorate program at SIUC as of summer 2004.

The four screenings the administering committee looks at are: the applicant is married, and with children, the significance of the research project and the overall scholarship.
