Salutes

James M. Hanson, researcher III in the Office of Economic and Research Development, published "A Phenomenological Case for the Family Farmer as an Environmental Steward" in Great Plains Research (pages 347-360, Vol. 11, No. 2; fall 2001).

Mythili Rundblad, coordinator of Student Development, and AmeriCorps members John Junge, a junior in physics, and Jessica Vozari, a junior in art education, presented "Land of Lincoln AmeriCorps at SIUC: One Model of a Service-Learning Program" at the Missouri Campus Compact at Southeast Missouri University April 18.

Representatives of WSIU-TV attended a celebration of early childhood education and the PBS Ready to Learn Service at the White House April 3. First lady Laura Bush welcomed Barbara Lesar, president of the Friends of WSIU board; Robert Gerig, director of the broadcasting service and general manager; and Candis Isberner, acting assistant director of broadcasting service in technology and planning. During the event, PBS launched the PBS Designated Reader Campaign, in which WSIU has teamed up with Unity Point School District 140.

The Department of Sociology initiated 10 students into Alpha Kappa Delta, the international sociology honor society April 11. New members are Jeanie Akamanti, Jacob W. Boner, Addrain S. Conyers, Karon M. Donahue, Nicole E. Long, Sharon E. Lorenzen, Gregory R. Maddox, Stephanie Medley, Reginald D. Nance and Donna-Marie Storey. These students were recognized for their high scholastic achievement in sociology and overall academic record.
