Salutes

Edward M. Benyas, associate professor of music and director of the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra, will conduct the Chicago Chamber Orchestra April 14. The concert will include Beethoven's Triple Concerto and Aaron Copland's "Lincoln Portrait," narrated by former U.S. Sen. Paul Simon.

John C. Crelling, professor of geology, will receive the 2002 Joseph Becker Award from the Iron and Steel Society at the 85th Steelmaking and 61st Ironmaking Conferences March 10-13 in Nashville, Tenn. The award honors outstanding achievements in coal carbonization and coal technology and improvements in the design, operation and productivity of coke plants and coal chemical recovery equipment.

Brannon P. Denning, assistant professor of law, reviewed Richard C. Cortner's "Civil Rights and Public Accommodations: The Heart of Atlanta Motel and McClung Cases" in Law Library Journal (pages 141-160, vol. 94, no. 1; winter 2002).

Anne Fletcher, assistant professor of theater, and Ronald A. Naversen, associate professor of theater, presented papers at the Federation of Theater Research's International Scenography Conference in Krakow, Poland, in July 2001. Fletcher's "Tradition and Innovation in the Early Designs of Mordecai Gorelik" and Naversen's "Scenographic Distance" have been published in Tradition and Innovation in Theater Design by the Dramatic Institute of the Jagiellonian University of Poland.

Saliwe M. Kawewe, professor in the School of Social Work, published "The Impact of Gender Disempowerment on the Welfare of Zimbabwean Women" in International Social Work Journal (pages 471-485, vol. 44, no. 2) and "Economic Disempowerment, Women's and Children's Rights in Zimbabwe" in Development: Journal for the Society for International Development (pages 107-110, vol. 44, no. 2). She also wrote a chapter on the Zimbabwe educational system for the World Education Encyclopedia.

Susan P. Liemer, assistant professor of law and director of the Lawyering Skills Program, published "Being a Beginner Again: A Teacher Training Exercise" in Perspectives: Teaching Legal Research and Writing (pages 87-88, vol. 10; winter 2002).

Karen Stoelzle Midden, associate professor of plant, soil and general agriculture, received the 2001 Community Service Award from the Illinois Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. The honor recognizes her involvement in campus and community landscape architecture and planning projects.

Karla J. Rankin, administrative assistant in the Budget Office, achieved the Certified Administrative Professional rating from the International Association of Administrative Professionals. This distinction requires an individual to meet education and experience requirements, then pass a comprehensive examination covering finance and business law, office systems and administration, management and organizational planning.
