Extern Program matches students with alumni
For 160 juniors and seniors, spring break isn't a chance to soak up some rays, it's a chance to soak up some valuable work experience.
The SIU Alumni Association, Student Alumni Council and the undergraduate colleges match juniors and seniors with alumni and friends of the University in professional environments nationwide through the Extern Program.
According to Brooke S. Johnson of the Alumni Association, students will spend March 11-15 at businesses such as Denver International Airport, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Continental Airlines in Houston, Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, Shedd Aquarium in Chicago and the Pittsburgh Pirates' baseball team.
"Sometimes students come in with their own ideas, and we work with them to match them up," Johnson said.
Thirty percent of students get offered a full-time job as a result of the Extern Program, she said. And, the number of sponsors expands every year, giving students a wide variety of career fields to connect with.
The program was established in 1984. It provides students with hands-on learning experience in their chosen fields of study. Students observe and learn about their career field, apply skills garnered in classroom activities and make valuable career contacts.
