Bookstore's $600,000 makeover begins in May

A new look and new amenities are on tap at the University Bookstore in the Student Center.

The nearly $600,000 remodeling project will start in mid-May and wrap up in early August. Manager Christopher Croson said half of the store will be open throughout the project.

Some of the store's lighting and all fixtures and carpeting will be replaced. All cash registers will be grouped in the front of the store, and a new customer service area will be more centrally located.

Croson said patrons will have Internet access at several computer kiosks, along with reading areas to sit and relax.

There will be a wider selection of magazines, general books, computer software and office supplies.

Customers will be able to buy snacks, soda and health and beauty items in a new marketplace area. The amount of space devoted to clothing and gifts will remain the same.

The bookstore's carpeting is 17 years old.

"We want to make sure the floors and the carpeting meld into the remodeling of the first floor of the Student Center that took place last year," Croson said.

Follett Higher Education Group from River Grove leases the bookstore from the University.

Student Center officials are pleased with the plans.

"We're very excited about the planned renovation, and we're looking forward to the enhancements," said Ken H. Jaros, associate director of the Student Center.
