SIUE alum donates police magazines to crime center
A donated collection of 32 years' worth of The Police Chief magazine will provide an invaluable resource for administration of justice students at the University.
Carl A. Bender of Belleville donated his personal collection of the journal, which covers the years 1969 through 2001. The Police Chief is the official publication of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Bender is a life member of the organization.
Bender, a security specialist at Commerce Bank of St. Louis, donated the collection to the Center for the Study of Crime, Delinquency and Corrections in February. The Center houses the University's bachelor's and master's degree programs in administration of justice. Bender said he selected the University for the gift because the center was willing to house the collection in its entirety and would make it available to students. Bender has a bachelor's degree in business and a master's degree in city and regional planning from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
"I wanted students to have access to the magazines, rather than just have them sit unused somewhere. There's so much history there. They cover every major event affecting law enforcement for the last 30 years," Bender said.
Thomas C. Castellano, director of the Center for the Study of Crime, Delinquency and Corrections, said acquisition of the collection of monthly publications will allow students and faculty to identify and track trends in the history of modern American policing.
"The Center welcomes the donation by Mr. Bender, who is a longtime friend and supporter of high-quality criminal justice education in this region. The fact that SIUC will be the repository of this valuable collection will benefit our students and faculty greatly," Castellano said. The administration of justice program provides students with a broad-based liberal arts education with a focus on criminal justice issues.
