Men's basketball to host Hawaii in Bracket Buster game
ESPN announced the 2004 field for Bracket Buster Feb. 1, sending Hawaii (14-4) to Southern Illinois (18-2) for an 11 p.m. CT game that will air live on ESPN on Saturday, Feb. 21. The network's second-annual event will match some of the nation's best college basketball teams in a wild-card, non-conference format. All 10 Missouri Valley Conference teams are participating, and four Valley teams are featured in the network's 10-game telecast schedule, which will air on ESPN2, ESPN, selected over-the-air-stations in the competing school's markets, and ESPN Plus/ESPN FULL COURT. The second-annual Bracket Buster event includes 46 teams from 11 conferences paired in 23 games. The 46 teams in the field feature 13 teams from the Mid-American Conference, 10 from the Missouri Valley Conference, eight from the Horizon League, three from the Sun Belt Conference and two from the Southern Conference, plus single teams from the Big West Conference, Colonial Athletic Association, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Ohio Valley Conference and West Coast Conference. While each conference selects their participating teams prior to the season and designates teams for home or road games, the match-ups, including the nationally televised games, were determined by ESPN in conjunction with the conferences. Southern Illinois and Hawaii have met twice before, with both games played on the Rainbows' home floor. Hawaii won both games, 84-71, on Dec. 22, 1989, and 80-66 on Dec. 7, 1997.
