State of the University address available

Southern Illinois Heart Walk is Oct. 4

Fundraising teams are being sought for the American Heart Association’s 2014 Southern Illinois Heart Walk, which takes place Oct. 4. SIU is a sponsor of the association’s ‘My Heart, My Life,’ healthy living program, and in the past five years has received $451,000 from the association in research grant funding. The heart walk is from 8 to 11 a.m. The event includes booth activities and opening ceremonies prior to participants walking one-half mile or 2.2 miles at 10 a.m. Teams can register online and pick up team materials in the Student Recreation Center’s Personal Wellness Studio.

Anyone wanting to form a team or register individually can visit southernillinoisheartwalk.org or contact the local American Heart Association director at beth.walker@heart.org or 618/942-7336. The Heart Walk will be held at John A. Logan College.

McNair Scholars applications due Nov. 7

Faculty should remind students who are interested in research opportunities they might be eligible for the 2014-2015 McNair Scholars Program. The program helps students realize their full potential by providing enriching educational experiences for first-generation, low-income college students from all ethnic backgrounds and underrepresented minorities. McNair scholars engage in educational and professional development activities that lay the foundation for stellar research and academic skills. Applications are accepted through Nov. 7, with the announcement of new scholars by Dec. 1.
