WINTER MEETING IN AUGUST (August 12 - Vandalia)

The new Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum is drawing all of the attention, but if you want to visit the place where Abe began his career and politics, received his license to practice law and gave his first speech on slavery, you have to come to Vandalia.

A tour of the Vandalia Statehouse, which served as the state capitol from 1836-39, is on the agenda for the winter meeting of the Southern Illinois Editorial Association. The winter meeting will be held on Friday, Aug. 12.

The day will start out at 9 a.m. with a tour of The Leader-Union, your host for the winter meeting. In addition to showing your facilities, we want to allow time for discussions on any issues you may be having, whether it is related to Photoshop, Quark Xpress, etc.

After the tour, we’ll proceed to The Depot, our former railroad depot that has been converted to a fine restaurant/bar. There, we’ll treat you to lunch.

After lunch, we’ll head to the Statehouse, where you can be part of a guided tour or roam the building on your own. In the building is the Supreme Court Room, where Lincoln’s name was entered onto the rolls of practicing attorneys, and the House of Representatives, where Abe first served as a state representative. A display documents his time in the Vandalia Statehouse.

Following the tour, those of us who are so inclined can return to The Depot for more socializing, which is – after all – the main purpose of the winter meeting.

Please give SIEA President Rich Bauer a call at the Vandalia Union if you have questions about the winter meeting.
