CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Four students at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will split a $20,000 award designed to help promising young artists.

The faculty of the SIUC School of Art and Design culled the four winners of the 2006 Rickert-Ziebold Trust Award from a group of 18 finalists.

The School of Art and Design announced this year's winners Monday (April 3). A complete list of this year's finalists, their medium, hometown and parents follows:

• Katy Setchell, sculpture, 616 E. Van Buren St., Ottawa. Tom and Jane Setchell.

• Jeremy H. Griffith, glass, 107 S. Hewitt St., Carbondale. Marilyn Haworth.

• Paula McAteer, drawing and painting, 101 E. High St., Freeburg. Pam and Mark McAteer.

• Effrosini Karayiannis, industrial design, 601 S. James St., Carbondale. Anastasios and Patricia Karayiannis.

The award, one of the largest of its type in the country, is in memory of the Joseph Rickert family, who established it to encourage young artists. Finalists typically represent the finest members of that year's graduating class.

Their artwork is on display from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the Surplus Gallery in the old Glove Factory, 408 S. Washington St. The exhibition also will run at the University Museum April 9-30, with a closing reception set for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 28.

Promoting excellence in undergraduate academics is among the goals of Southern at 150: Building Excellence Through Commitment, the blueprint the University is following as it approaches its 150th anniversary in 2019.
