Printmaker Carmen Colangelo to speak at SIUC

By Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The School of Art and Design at Southern Illinois University Carbondale welcomes printmaker Carmen Colangelo, dean of the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, as part of the Visiting Artist program.

Colangelo presents a free lecture beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, in Lawson Hall, Room 121. Lawson Hall is on Lincoln Drive next to the Life Science buildings.

Colangelo earned a bachelor's degree of fine arts from the University of Windsor in 1981, then a master's degree of fine arts from Louisiana State University in 1983, specializing always in printmaking. His work is shown in a busy schedule of solo and group exhibitions. Currently, he has a solo exhibition at the Bruno David Gallery in St. Louis. His work has been all over the country and he has solo exhibits in Mexico, Italy and England – to name some of the more recent – to his credit as well. Colangelo's works are in collections including the National Museum of American Art in Washington, D. C., the New York Public Library and the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, France.

Colangelo is as busy and as widely traveled as his artwork. His visiting artist destinations include Vanderbilt University, Indiana University, Rice University as well as universities in Berlin, Germany, Venice, Italy and Liverpool, England.

His printmaking typically incorporates several techniques with a blending of modern digital processes with more traditional methods like intaglio and silkscreen. His works blend modern and traditional images as well, building a depth visually and symbolically. The School of Art and Design has several of his images on their Web site at www.artanddesign.siu.edu. Follow the links through the Visiting Artist program.

The Fine Arts Activity Fee contributed to Colangelo's visit.
