Meghann Pytka, Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies, was competitively selected by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to participate in the 2017 Jack and Anita Hess Faculty Seminar. The seminar, Jan. 9-13, will focus on “how National Socialist thinking shaped the ideologies of sexuality, race and gender that justified the violent exclusion of other, ‘non-Aryan’ groups from the idealized German national body . . . .” The seminar is designed for college and university faculty who are teaching or preparing to teach Holocaust or Holocaust-related courses.

Patricia Saleeby, School of Social Work, was recently appointed an Illinois Board of Education (IBHE) Faculty Fellow. She will be conducting a research study focusing on identifying effective educational strategies to support students with disabilities across racial, economic, socio-economic, geographical and other key demographic indicators. The information secured will provide a greater understanding of the needs, costs, gaps, resources, success, and best practices associated with supporting students with disabilities at postsecondary institutions in Illinois and across the country.

Chad Schwartz, School of Architecture, is author of “Introducing Architectural Tectonics: Exploring the Intersection of Design and Construction” through Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group.

The work of Daniel Hummer, Geology, was featured in a October edition of “Science News.” Hummer and his collaborators used statistical methods normally used for ecological studies to predict the existence of more than 140 undiscovered minerals containing carbon. Hummer, as principle investigator, is on a worldwide hunt for the “missing minerals.” To date, eight minerals previously unknown to science have been found.

Justin Filiberto, Geology, attended as an invited guest the September launch of the OSIRIS-REx mission, a New Frontiers NASA mission that will visit the asteroid 1019555 Bennu in 2018 and return a surface sample to earth in 2023.
