Media Advisory – Expanding Your Horizons

An event this weekend at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will help young women explore careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Students in grades 5-9 from local junior high and high schools are expected at the 27th annual “Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics” conference, Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Student Center and other sites on campus. The event provides girls with workshops, networking and hands-on experiences aimed at increasing their awareness of career opportunities in STEM-related fields.

Reporters, photographers and camera crews are welcome to cover the event, which runs from 8:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Organized by the Department of Mathematics in the College of Science, the conference will feature more than 30 professionals from the university, surrounding community colleges and private companies donating their time to lead workshops. The workshops also give girls the opportunity to connect with women role models who are already in science-related careers.

Among the nearly 20 workshop offerings this year are sessions on aviation, biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, economics, engineering and technology, geology, mathematics, medicine, physical fitness, psychology and zoology.
