Media Advisory -- SIU lacrosse team helping Houston

Members of Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s men’s lacrosse team, a club sport, are collecting donations today (Friday, Sept. 1) to help the people of Houston affected by Hurricane Harvey. They will then travel to Texas to deliver the items and volunteer their assistance this weekend.

Donations of water, toiletries, pre-packaged food, canned goods, diapers, blankets and other essentials are being collected until 3:30 p.m. today in the Rehn Hall/Lawson Hall parking lot on Lincoln Drive at SIU. Reporters, photographers and news crews are welcome to cover this benefit.

David McCauley, team president, and least five other lacrosse team members plan to drive overnight to Houston. They will deliver the items they collect to shelters in the Houston area. They will also volunteer their time this weekend wherever needed to help with relief efforts before returning to SIU for classes on Tuesday. McCauley, who is from Geneva, is a senior majoring in forestry.

For more information about this project, visit the donation site or contact McCauley at 630-277-6096 or by email at siumenslax@gmail.com.
