Media Advisory – SIU Move-in 2017 with New Chancellor

Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Chancellor Carlo Montemagno are welcoming new and returning students to campus in preparation for the fall semester.

New students will move into campus residence halls on Wednesday, Aug. 16. Returning students will move in on Thursday, Aug. 17.  Move-in takes places from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the residence halls across campus.

SPECIAL NOTICE: New SIU Chancellor Carlo Montemagno will be helping new students move in from 8 to 11: 30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 16. Contact Rae Goldsmith, (618) 303-9997 by phone or text if you plan to cover the chancellor’s participation in move-in and she will follow up to let you know where he will be at the time you plan to be there.

The move-in process typically begins with students and their families dropping off the student’s belongings at designated areas located near each residence hall. Volunteers assist in moving the student’s belongings. Students who will reside in the towers, located on the east side of campus, will receive a number when they arrive in order to help alleviate congestion. When their number is called, move-in volunteers will help move their belongings to their rooms.

Hundreds of volunteers from campus and the surrounding community have registered to welcome students to campus and make move-in an easier and more enjoyable event. Students who reside in University Housing, along with their families and the registered volunteer helpers, will enjoy a free meal in the dining halls on Wednesday and Thursday.

The registered volunteers will receive their complimentary meal tickets upon completion of their move-in shift. Students will receive a Family Meal Pass when they check in. Other people may eat at the dining halls by purchasing a guest meal ticket at the entrance.

Salukis, both returning and new, can start off the semester on a positive note by participating in a wide variety of special activities created especially for them.
