by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Applications are now being accepted for Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s 2017 Saluki Strength Breast Cancer Scholarship.

Thanks to the generosity of donors and fundraising efforts on campus, this year five SIU undergraduate students will each receive a $1,250 scholarship.

The deadline to apply is Feb. 15. To complete an application, visit www.siuacademicworks.com and sign in with your SIU ID and type in “breast cancer” as the key words.

The Saluki “Start Seeing Pink” initiative launched in 2014 and by the next year, fundraising allowed two scholarships to be awarded. In 2016 there were three winners. In addition, this year, all underclassmen who have been affected by breast cancer in some way are eligible.

Each October, SIU hosts a “Start Seeing Pink” observance during Breast Cancer Awareness Month featuring special activities and promotions to increase breast cancer awareness and raise funds for scholarships and other assistance for students affected by breast cancer.
