Media Advisory – Girls in Aviation Day

A program that will introduce girls to careers in aviation will take place Saturday, Sept. 24, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Transportation Education Center.

Up to 25 girls between eight and 13 years old will participate in the second “Girls In Aviation Day.” Last year, 15 students participated in the event, which included building and launching bottle rockets, riveting sheet metal, making and using paper compasses, participating in an aeronautical lab and demonstration, and flying in Frasca glass cockpit simulators.

Reporters, photographers and news crews are welcome to cover the free workshop, which is from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The primary location will be in the aviation technologies building main hangar, Room 145, on the southwest side of the building. Women in Aviation, a registered student organization, is sponsoring the event. The “Girls in Aviation Day” is part of a worldwide Women In Aviation International event.

SIU Carbondale faculty and aviation students will be available for interviews. For more information, contact Rachel Lee at 618/453-9206 or rllee@siu.edu, or Amelia Phillips, student president of the university’s Women in Aviation chapter, at aoap16@siu.edu.
