Leadership conferences planned at SIU

by Tim Crosby

CARBONDALE -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale later this month will play host to two conferences, both of which are aimed at building the leaders of tomorrow.

LEAD 2016 will bring together two leadership efforts -- The Women’s Leadership Conference and the SI Leadership Conference. The event is set for Friday, Sept. 30, at the Student Center.

Now in its third year, the Women’s Leadership Conference strives to develop women leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics -- also known as the “STEM areas” -- as well as in business, and agricultural fields.

Organizers invite all university students, as well as high school students to attend the conference, which also will give them an opportunity to visit SIU, network with current students, faculty and staff, and gain insight on university programming.

Check in for the Women’s Leadership Conference begins at 7:45 a.m. with the conference beginning at 8:30 a.m. and running until noon.

The SI Leadership Conference, which now is in its sixth year, helps students develop their own leadership styles through the encouragement of peers and professionals. That conference will take place in the afternoon that day, from 1:45 to 5:15. The conference is meant for students with special emphasis on those involved in Registered Student Organizations.

Tying the conferences together is Linda Baker, university professor with the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, who will give the keynote address for the event during lunch, from noon until 1:30 p.m.

Registration deadline is Sept. 16. To register go here. Registration for either conference is $5 or $8 for both conferences. The fee includes conference materials, refreshments, lunch and parking pass. Cash registration at the door on the day of the events also will be available, but organizers cannot guarantee lunch for those attendees paying at the door.
