Planning under way for Up ‘til Dawn benefit

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Students at Southern Illinois University Carbondale are gearing up for their annual Up ‘til Dawn event to benefit St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

The Up ‘til Dawn Registered Student Organization is holding a “Dogs and Dawgs” promotion on Tuesday, Sept. 29, in an effort to increase involvement and awareness about the Nov. 7 benefit.

Students will have multiple opportunities on Tuesday to sign up to participate in Up ‘til Dawn. From 8 to 10 a.m. in the Faner Hall breezeway, students can meet some of the official canine Saluki mascots and enjoy free doughnuts. Then, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of Lawson Hall and from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Trueblood and Lentz dining halls, there will be food and fun with other local pet dogs in attendance. Advisers and members of the executive board will be on hand throughout the day and a representative from St. Jude will be at the morning segment.

In just the last seven years, SIU students have raised more than $200,000 for the research hospital through annual Up ‘til Dawn events.

Students who sign up to participate in Up ‘til Dawn will solicit donations from friends, family and the community for St. Jude and then celebrate their successful efforts with an all-night festival of games, competition and special activities on Nov. 7 on the SIU campus.
