Africana Theatre Laboratory presents production

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Africana Theatre Laboratory at Southern Illinois University Carbondale presents “I Can’t Breathe,” a free theatrical presentation, at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1, in the C. H. Moe Theater.

The Africana Theatre Laboratory is a registered student organization that produces plays, musicals and other theatrical productions with the goal of educating about African and black American art forms through entertainment. With this production, the organization approaches the current “headline news” topic of fatal encounters between black Americans and law enforcement.

“Africana means we project black stories, black culture and black presence on the American stage as a vital part of the American culture,” Modupe Margaret Ogunyemi, a senior theater student and president of the Africana Theatre Laboratory, said. She noted that the RSO does not exclude non-black students from joining.

This presentation is admission free.
