Touch of Nature offers daytime scenic excursions

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The anticipated spring thaw will bring opportunities for the public and Southern Illinois University Carbondale students to learn about some of the most beautiful natural places in the region.

For four Saturdays, beginning March 7, the Touch of Nature Environmental Center will host daytime excursions with “Oh the Places You’ll Go.”

Participants will hike Panther Den Wilderness on March 7. On March 21, the excursion includes a visit to Millstone Bluff and Sand Cave areas at the Garden of the Gods. On March 28, Piney Creek Ravine is the destination, while on April 4, participants will paddle along the fragile ecosystem of the Cache River.

The first three Saturday hiking excursions are donation-based.  The Cache River trip on April 4 is $10 apiece for SIU Carbondale students and children 12 years and younger; $20 each for those 13 years and older. Registration is required for all these programs. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

A 14-passenger bus will be available in front of the Student Center for each trip and will leave at 9 a.m., returning after the program concludes. Participants are also encouraged to carpool.

For more information and to pre-register, call Touch of Nature at 618/453-1121 or visit ton.siu.edu/ for information on upcoming events.
