by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale is offering a special edition of its popular summer “Eco Camp” for children during the Valentine’s Day weekend.

“I ‘Heart’ Eco Mini-Camp” will provide a wide variety of special activities for youths in grades 2-8 Feb. 14-15 at Touch of Nature Environmental Center. Check-in is from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14, and activities will continue until 10 that evening and then resume Sunday morning and last until 11 a.m.

The camp will feature games, arts and crafts and evening entertainment by local teen rock performer Everett Gariepy, of the Burning Hotels. Campers will also study the process of making real maple syrup from gathered sap and will study winter ecology through outdoor activities.

The cost is $40 for those who attend all day Saturday or $60 for those who stay overnight. For those who have formerly participated in a summer Eco Camp or for additional children attending from the same immediate family, the overnight camp price drops to $50. The fee covers all activities, snacks and the Saturday evening and Sunday morning meals.
