Library’s Giving Tree supports ‘I Can Read’ program

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A special tree at Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Morris Library will give the gift of words to area children this holiday season.

The Morris Library Holiday Giving Tree is covered with bookmarks created from vintage greeting cards, each bearing a book title. People are encouraged take one or more cards and then purchase and return the book(s), unwrapped, to the library circulation desk by Dec. 17. The title name stickers will easily peel off, leaving beautiful bookmarks for the donors to enjoy.

All books will be donated to Carbondale’s “I Can Read!” program to help children learn to read and develop a passion for reading. The program provides books and tutors to improve the reading and writing skills of children in grades K-5.

The library will be accepting cash donations for “I Can Read!” as well.
