Media Availability – Simon Institute Events

Reporters, photographers and news crews are welcome to attend a pair of media availabilities set for Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Paul Simon Public Policy Institute.  David Yepsen, institute director, will serve as moderator for both events.

At 10 a.m., Patti Derge Simon and John Oldfield, CEO of WASH Advocates, will discuss their upcoming lecture on the status of the “Paul Simon Water for the World Act.” Simon, wife of the late U.S. Sen. Paul Simon, and Oldfield, will present a lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Student Center Ballroom B. The lecture is free and the public is invited.

At 10:30 a.m., the institute will host teacher Jamie Nash-Mayberry and 13 of her Shawnee High School Students who are receiving a McCormick Foundation award designating the high school as an Illinois Democracy School. The award recognizes the school for its civic education program, which includes efforts to secure levee improvements in the region.  Since 2006, 31 Illinois high schools have been recognized as an Illinois Democracy School, with Shawnee High School the second in Southern Illinois to receive the honor.
