Touch of Nature will host ‘Traditions Respite Camp’

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill.  -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Camp Little Giant has long been a place where people of varying abilities and disabilities can enjoy a true summer camp experience. There is now another new experience for those campers.

For the first time, SIU’s Touch of Nature Environmental Center will offer the Traditions Respite Camp.  The camp, from 1 p.m., Sept. 26 to 3 p.m., Sept. 28, is for people 18 years and older with physical, cognitive or developmental disabilities. The camp will take place at the center located eight miles south of Carbondale on Giant City Road.

Camp officials said the respite camp was added at the request of campers and their families who found the summer camp to be such a great experience that they wanted something similar at another time of year. Participants will enjoy a variety of special activities including sports and games, boating, arts and crafts, a hayride, a campfire, beachfront activities and more.

The cost is $185 per person. The registration deadline is Sept. 18.  To register, or for more information, call 618/453-1121.
