SIU police website offers safety tips, resources

by Pete Rosenbery

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A new Southern Illinois University Carbondale Department of Public Safety website offers a variety of educational resources designed to enhance safety on campus.

Safety Awareness Facts and Education, or SAFE, provides tips on theft and identity theft prevention, women’s self-defense, and information on SIU’s Brightway Path, Night Safety Transit service and emergency call box locations. There are also details about the mandatory crime prevention training programs for students, faculty and staff, along with on- and off-campus resources.

“SIU is committed to maintaining a safe, healthy, and productive environment for all students, employees, and campus community,” police Sgt. Chad M. Beights said. “This website provides information to assist faculty, staff, students and the campus community in accomplishing this goal by providing education and resources to promote a safe campus.”

The university’s annual security and fire report and the daily crime log will also be available on the website in accordance with the federally mandated Clery Act.

The website is available at http://safe.siu.edu/.
