Cole wins ‘Jabberwock Review’ editor’s prize
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Emily Rose Cole, a first year graduate student in the master of fine arts in creative writing program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, won the Nancy D. Hargrove Editors’ Prize in Poetry from the “Jabberwock Review,” a national literary journal produced at Mississippi State University.
Cole, a Emmaus, Pa., native, received a $500 cash prize for her poem, “Judy Garland Tells the Truth of Her Early Career.” Her poem will appear in a forthcoming issue of “Jabberwock Review.”
Cole is also the recipient of a scholarship to a new summer writing program, the Big River Writers Conference, which will be in St. Louis June 4-8. While at the conference, Cole will work with awarding winning poet Adrian Matejka, a 2001 SIU creative writing MFA graduate.
Allison Joseph, director of the MFA program in creative writing, said she is proud of the continuing loyalty and friendship of former students. She is always quick to share success stories of current and former students, and pointed out that Matejka recently received a Guggenheim Fellowship. Matejka also received the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for “The Big Smoke,” about Jack Johnson, the first black heavyweight boxing world champion.
Matejka is one of several guests at the annual Little Grassy Literary Festival, which comes to SIU Wednesday through Friday, April 16-18.
