‘Die Fledermaus’ comes to McLeod next week
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- What do you do when you’ve been abandoned on a park bench dressed as a bat after a crazy masquerade party? If you are in the Strauss operetta “Die Fledermaus,” you plot revenge -- and your plot becomes more complicated and hilarious by the minute.
The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Department of Theater and School of Music present the famous operetta of how Gabriel von Eisenstein got “punked” by his friend, the bat (Die Fledermaus), at McLeod Theater Communication Building during a Feb. 28-March 2 performance run. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m., and the Sunday performance is at 2 p.m.
Tim Fink, a professor in the School of Music, directs this SIU production. Paul Transue, an associate professor in the School of Music is musical director and Mark Allan Davis, a lecturer in the Department of Theater, is choreographing the production. The operetta is performed in English with the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra under the direction of conductor Ed Benyas. Casey Watkins designs the costumes, Logan Reagan the sets, and Delaney McKenzie the lighting.
Transue will provide a pre-show lecture at 1:30 p.m. prior to the March 2 performance. The lecture will be in the dean’s conference room in the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts.
Tickets are $16 for adults and $6 for students and are available by phone at 618/453-6000, at SouthernTicketsOnline.com, or from noon to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the McLeod Theater Box Office in the Communications Building. Tickets will also be available one hour before each performance.
