Art Over Easy 9 is Dec. 6 at Surplus Gallery

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Gala -- it means a festive occasion, particularly a lavish one.  It’s a fitting description for the annual Southern Illinois University Carbondale juried art auction and fundraiser known as Art Over Easy.

Art Over Easy Nine takes place 7-9:30 p.m. on Dec. 6 at the Surplus Gallery in the Glove Factory art facility (432 S. Washington Ave.)  It’s an art sale and social event that ushers in the holiday season.  The event includes music, refreshments, and art for sale and for admiration, all wrapped up in a neat package of charitable social event and exclusive holiday shopping opportunity.

Art Over Easy is the major fundraiser for the School of Art and Design.  Monies raised this year will help match two private grants, and provide scholarships and research and creative activity grants.  The event offers a silent auction that runs throughout most of the evening.  A highlight, though, is the live auction, where bidding for particular artists and pieces can become competitive and entertaining.

This year’s catalog includes work that is truly representative of Southern Illinois, including SIU School of Art and Design faculty, both current and emeritus, and graduate students, as well as art contributed by members of the Southern Illinois region.  Auction attendees can expect a variety of media, including paintings and drawings, sculptures, jewelry and ceramics.

Because this is a juried auction, there is a competitive note even to submitting artwork for the sale.  This year’s juror is John Lustig, an SIU School of Art and Design alum, and currently director of the Illinois State Museum at Lockport. Art contributors are eligible for awards in several categories: alumni, student, faculty and community.

Admission for the event is $30.
