Students, kids can enjoy ‘Friday Fun at the Rec’

by Scott Schackmann and Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. --  “Friday Fun at the Rec” is a Southern Illinois University Carbondale event that gives students with children the opportunity to enjoy a little respite while the kids have a great time.

Non-Traditional Student Services is teaming with Recreational Sports and Services and Student Support Services to sponsor the monthly event that kicks off Friday, Oct. 4.  Each themed event is from 5 to 7 p.m. in the upper level studio 7, formerly room 158, in the Student Recreation Center.  Future “Friday Fun at the Rec” nights will include Racket Night on Nov. 1 and Sports Night on Dec. 6.

“The task of balancing school, work and family is a source of stress for many students with families.  Two hours of free time a month provided by Friday Fun at the Rec may seem trivial, but it may be the only leisure time that some of our parents get, and that’s why we’re happy to be involved,” Renada Greer, director of Student Support Services, said.

While SIU students will relish a couple of hours to themselves, their children, ages three and older, will enjoy games, snacks, recreation and a variety of fun activities.

New this fall is Family Fitness with Maggie Sykes.  This portion of the program gives students with children under the age of three the opportunity to participate in toddler/infant family fitness activities with their child.  Sykes, an SIU alumna and mother of an infant, will lead the program designed to give people the opportunity to get in shape, have fun with their young child and get to know other parents.

The cost for “Friday Fun at the Rec” is $2 per child, payable at the door, with a maximum cost of $5 per family.  The funds will help offset the cost of snacks and supplies.

Registration is available online through Non-Traditional Student Services at www.nontrad.siu.edu.
