Campus Safety Alert

The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Department of Public Safety is investigating a robbery that occurred early this morning (Sept. 15) in the parking lot north of the Student Recreation Center.

The victim, an 18-year-old SIU student, told police that he was walking through the parking lot toward his residence hall at 3:18 a.m. when he heard two men walking toward him from behind. He then saw two more men walking toward him, and two others approach from the side.

The victim was told to throw his wallet down and remain there.  After the victim complied, the six suspects then ran north from the parking lot toward Mill Street.

The victim was not injured.

The six suspects are all African American males.  Two of the suspects were wearing hooded sweatshirts and black sweat pants, and dark bandanas with a white diamond pattern. Two other suspects were wearing white T-shirts and dark shorts, also with dark bandanas, and the remaining two suspects were wearing long-sleeve black shirts, black sweatpants, possibly white tennis shoes, and red bandanas.

Anyone with information about the incident should call the SIU Carbondale Department of Public Safety at 618/453-3771 or the Crime Stopper Line at 618/549-COPS.

Police advise members of the campus community to be aware of their surroundings at all times, and if traveling at night to use the Saluki Express, Night Safety Transit Service and Brightway Path.  In addition, emergency call phones are located across campus, including on both overpasses.
