Inaugural ‘Forever SIU’ celebrates Class of 2013

by Joaquin Norman

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A festive event celebrating the accomplishments of Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Class of 2013 is set for Friday, May 10.

The inaugural “Forever SIU: A Commencement Celebration,” will offer graduating seniors and their families the opportunity to gather for fun and refreshments the evening before commencement.  The event is from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the SIU Arena parking lot.

In the event of inclement weather, the event will move to the Student Center Ballrooms.  Tickets are not required.

Spring 2013 commencement ceremonies are at 9 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 6 p.m., Saturday, May 11, in the SIU Arena.

Chancellor Rita Cheng will open Friday’s festivities, which also will include live music from Chicago-based cover band, “Mike and Joe.”  There will also be light refreshments, and students and their families will have the opportunity to mingle with the deans and faculty members of the various colleges.

“I’ll be there early with my family. I think it’s a good idea for SIU to have this for the seniors and give them a chance to introduce their families to the teachers and other faculty members that they’ve been with over their time here at SIU,” Davida Scott, a graduating criminal justice major, said.

Official SIU retailers 710 Bookstore and SIU Bookstore along with the SIU Alumni Association will be on hand to offer “Forever SIU” participants an opportunity to purchase official graduation T-shirts, rings, and other SIU items, provide regalia assistance and information about Alumni Association memberships and benefits.
