Students take home regional ‘ADDY’ honors

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale students showed their creative talents recently in the American Advertising Federation ADDY regional competition.

Nine students took home six awards -- three gold, one silver and two bronze -- for their work.  The tri-state competition recognizes the work of advertising industry professionals and students in Southern Illinois, southeast Missouri, and western Kentucky.  The awards ceremony was March 1 in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

The gold and silver winners advance to the District 9 ADDY Awards competition.  Since 2007, SIU Carbondale students have earned 54 local, regional, national and international advertising awards, said Linda Conway Correll, an assistant professor in the SIU School of Journalism.

Student winners were:

  • Whitney Drake, a senior majoring in journalism, Mount Vernon.  She received a bronze ADDY for her Seoul, Korea destination ad, and a silver ADDY for a Reebok print ad.
  • Jacoby Duckworth, junior, journalism, Decatur; Alex Hines, senior, art and design, Carterville, and Brooke Pippins, senior, journalism, Vandalia, earned two gold ADDYS for a Neil Lane engagement ring campaign, and a humorous campaign featuring dogs doing human activities.
  • Michael Faletti, senior, art and design, Alsip; Jeremy Meyer, junior, journalism, Homewood, and Brittany Strong, senior, journalism, Chicago, earned a bronze ADDY for their Vera Wang Wedding Apparel print campaign.
  • Juvonna McGarry, senior, journalism, Chicago, and Casey Shepard, senior, journalism, Marion, earned a gold ADDY for an advertising campaign for Cuisinart Cutlery.
