Holiday concerts on tap at Shryock Auditorium

by Jordan Wren

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Two concerts that are sure to put patrons in the holiday spirit will take the stage at Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Shryock Auditorium next week.

The SIU Carbondale Choral Union and Concert Choir, along with the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra, will present a concert on Tuesday, Dec. 4.

“Buon Natale! Christmas in Italy,” begins at 7:30 p.m. at Shryock Auditorium. Tickets are $12 for general admission, $6 for students.

The program includes Gabrieli’s “Hodie Christus Natus Est,” and “Kyrie,” and “Gloria,” from Puccini’s “Messa di Gloria.” A selection of other Italian holiday favorites is included, said Susan Davenport, director of choral activities and assistant professor of music.

“This concert is certain to get you into the holiday spirit,” Davenport said.

The Southern Illinois University Wind Ensemble will present its concert on Dec. 6. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m., also at Shryock Auditorium. Tickets are $12 for general admission, $6 for students.

The concert will feature symphonic songs from Bach, Robert Russell Bennett, Chance, Dello Joio, Grainger and Sousa.

“It’s a great evening for band music to take your mind off all that studying,” said Christopher Morehouse, director of bands and associate professor in the University’s School of Music.

Tickets are available at the door, beginning one hour before the concert. Tickets are also available in advance at the Shryock Auditorium box office, by phone at 618/453-6000, or online at southernticketsonline.com/
