Prepare to be ‘Caught Green Handed’ next week

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Taking care of the planet could just earn you rewards at Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s “Caught Green Handed” event next week.

On Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 14 and 15, student volunteers wearing “America Recycles Day” T-shirts, will travel around campus looking for people who are putting cans, bottles and paper in the appropriate recycling receptacles.   If the volunteers see you recycling you could earn a prize that could include gift cards to local restaurants and Saluki T-shirts.

The “Caught Green Handed” team will also snap photos of people recycling and post the pictures on the “Caught Green Handed” Facebook event page.  Other people around campus are also welcome to take photos of their friends and colleagues recycling and also post them on the page.

The event page can be found by “liking” SIU Sustainability on Facebook.

“Caught Green Handed” is taking place in conjunction with the national “America Recycles Day,” which promotes and celebrates recycling in the United States.  The University recycles plastic, glass, aluminum, tin, paper, cardboard, magazines, books and more.  Recycling of printer cartridges is also common on campus.  Organizers hope “Caught Green Handed” will bring attention to and accelerate the ongoing recycling efforts at SIU Carbondale.

“America Recycles Day is a wonderful chance to celebrate SIU’s recycling efforts.  For the past three months, we’ve had record-breaking numbers for our total recycling.  This wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for many individuals making the choice to put their recyclables in the correct bin,” said Megan Nollman, graduate assistant recycling coordinator.
