‘Saluki Sprint,’ tailgate, to welcome new students

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- New Southern Illinois University Carbondale students will have the chance next week to experience some of the fun of college football and be part of the Saluki family.

All new SIU Carbondale students can participate in the Saluki Sprint and New Student Tailgate prior to the Saluki’s 2012 football season home opener against Southeast Missouri State on Sept. 15.

The New Student Tailgate begins at 3 p.m. in the student tailgate section for Saluki football.  The tailgate will give students the opportunity to grab a bite to eat and get acquainted with other new students on campus.

Then, promptly at 5:15 p.m., students will join other new students for a once-in-a-lifetime chance to sprint through Saluki Stadium to the inspirational cheers of thousands of fans.  The event precedes the 6 p.m. football game.  Last year, more than 400 new students participated in the inaugural Saluki Sprint.

The Office of the Chancellor, New Student Programs, Saluki Athletics, and the city of Carbondale invite all new students to join in on the fun.

Students who sign up online prior to Friday, Sept. 7, will receive a free official Saluki Spring -- Class of 2016 T-shirt.  Students can sign up at: https://docs.google.com/a/siu.edu/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dHc2enFFVmZuSHh5RXNlLUQ5RkE2Vnc6MQ. Participating students must present their student ID, and sign a waiver.
