CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale's 9/11 Day of Remembrance and Service will give people an opportunity to express their appreciation to area veterans and first responders.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 11, in the main breezeway along Faner Hall, students, faculty, staff, and the community will be able to stop and make appreciation cards for veterans and local firefighters and police. The service activity project is free and supplies will be provided.

The Center for Service Learning and Volunteerism is sponsoring the event.

Organizers will distribute the cards to local first responders and veterans. The cards will go to local police and firefighters in the area, the SIU Carbondale Veterans Center, and to veterans at the Marion VA Medical Center.
