Music Festival coming to Cobden, Makanda

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois Music Festival, hosted by Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s School of Music, brings performances to Cobden and Makanda on consecutive weekends in June.

On June 10, the New Arts Jazztet comes to Starview Vineyards with a 5 p.m. free performance.

The New Arts Jazztet is Southern Illinois’ premier jazz ensemble. and includes several members of the SIU Carbondale School of Music. The group naturally holds a large repertoire of jazz standards, but it is known for its own “hard-bop” compositions as well.

June 16 is children’s day.  Klassics for Kids comes to the Old Feed Store in Cobden, while Jive with Jazz comes to the Renascence House in Makanda.  Both performances begin at 10 a.m., and both are free.

Klassics for Kids is an interactive concert designed for the very youngest listeners.  The setting is an informal, fun place to teach children about listening to music, and about different styles of music and music performance.  Large groups, such as day cares and summer schools, are encouraged to attend and do not need reservations.

Jive with Jazz is similar, but generally appeals to school-aged listeners
