University to celebrate Greek Week 2012

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale will celebrate Greek Week 2012 with an assortment of special activities, including sports competitions, community service and a national Greek organization president as guest speaker.

The events begin Saturday, April 21, and continue through April 28.  The University has celebrated Greek Week annually since the 1960s and the Inter-Greek Council welcomes all SIU Carbondale students to come learn more about Greek life.  The University has 31 fraternities and sororities.

One of the highlights of Greek Week is a presentation by Shelly Brown Dobek, double alumna of SIU Carbondale and president of the national organization, the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors.  Her presentation is at 8 p.m. on April 26 at the Wham Building Auditorium and she’ll speak on “Moving the Community Forward.”

Dobek earned her bachelor’s degree in liberal arts in 1996 and her master’s degree in education in 1998. As a student, she was a member of the Gamma Omega Chapter of Delta Zeta, serving on the executive board, as house manager, and as chair of the Academic Advisory Board.  She earned the “Promise of the Province” recognition in fall 1994 and under her leadership, her chapter won the award for Outstanding Sorority Education Programs.  In addition, she served as an executive board member on the Inter-Greek Council, as chief justice of the Judiciary Board of Governance for Undergraduate Student Government and was the 1995-1996 Panhellenic president.

In addition to her work within the Greek community and beyond as an undergraduate and graduate student at SIU Carbondale, Dobek continued her efforts promoting the Greek community at other colleges.  She is currently director of chapter services and has served as associate director of Greek life for 10 years at North Carolina State University.  She is the 2011 winner of the Sue Kraft Fussell Distinguished Service Award from the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors.
