Webinar offers tips for engaging online students

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- As online learning opportunities increase in variety and importance, a new kind of student is born.  For professors and teachers accustomed to live classrooms and physically present students, this new arena offers new options, but new challenges as well.

The Center for Teaching Excellence, in coordination with the Office of Distance Education and Off Campus Programs at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, offers a lunchtime webinar focused on helping collegiate educators meet some of these challenges.

The “brown bag lunch” webinar is noon to 1:30 p.m. on March 19 in the Mississippi Room of the Student Center.  The event is free.

The webinar, “Approaches to Engaging, Connecting, and Retaining Online Students” is meant to help online teachers engage with their students throughout that student’s “life” as an online student.  Topics include: increasing retention and brand recognition through programming and instruction; instructional strategies; online resource portals; developing a sense of classroom community online; and use of pre-enrollment orientation; and other topics.

Pre-registration is encouraged.  Contact Julie Eisenhauer at juliee@siu.edu
