Family Carnival will offer resources, fun

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Wide World of Activities Family Carnival is both an evening of fun for the whole family and a chance to find out about many of the family friendly activities and programs available within the University and community.

The carnival is set for 3-5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Student Recreation Center’s small gymnasium.  It is free and open to all students, faculty and staff with children.  The whole family is welcome -- traditional or non-traditional.  An adult must accompany children.

Participants will enjoy free snacks, games, prizes and fun.  Upon arrival, the children will each get a “passport” they’ll use to travel around the “Wide World of Activities.”  They will experience a wide array of activities with an international flair.  That includes crafts from the Student Center Craft shop, games, sporting activities and more.

There are even prizes for children and adults.

Meanwhile, the event provides the opportunity to learn about the many programs, activities, services and resources for families on campus and in the surrounding area.  Numerous SIU Carbondale organizations, units and departments will offer information about what they have to offer families and children, as will community agencies, organizations and clubs.  The evening also presents a chance to meet and socialize with other parents.

This is the University’s third Family Carnival at the Student Recreation Center and its predecessors have been wildly popular, according to Kathy Hollister, assistant director of special populations.
