‘Divas of Diversity’ features workshop, show

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Not just anyone can be a true diva.  A two-part event at Southern Illinois University Carbondale Oct. 26 explores the world of divas, drag and diversity.

Divas of Diversity includes a workshop and a special evening of entertainment featuring a celebrity.  The Diva 101 (Drag 101) workshop is at 3 p.m. in the Student Center Auditorium.  Diva Morgan McMichaels (Thomas White), will offer up the history of drag combined with a lesson highlighting the skills and tools necessary to make the ‘drag’ transformation.  McMichaels, a native of Scotland, appeared on RuPaul’s “Drag Race” and “Drag U.”  McMichaels also toured the country performing in drag shows and works to promote understanding and acceptance of gay and transgender individuals.

From the diva, you’ll learn everything from tips on choosing the right wig and outfit to applying makeup, walking in heels, and how to put together a crowd-pleasing show.  Participants can even test their newfound skills.

Then at 7 p.m., also in the auditorium, come to the Divas of Diversity show, featuring McMichaels.  A question and answer session follows the entertainment.

Both events are free and open to all.

Sponsors of Divas of Diversity include Student Center Special Programs and Center Events, Multicultural Programs and Services, Student Health Services and University Housing.
