Group alters name to SIUC Annuitants Association

by Pete Rosenbery

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- An organization that represents retired and active employees at Southern Illinois University Carbondale recently changed its name.

The SIUC Annuitants Association (SIUC-AA) was previously the SIUC Emeritus and Annuitants Association.  Organization members approved the name change at its last general meeting Sept. 23, said John Pohlmann, association president.

“This change brings our name in line with that of the other chapters affiliated with our statewide organization, the State University Annuitants Association,” Pohlmann said.  “The words ‘Emeritus’ and ‘Annuitant’ are redundant and have caused some confusion among our members and the public.  The Emeritus Faculty Organization continues to participate as an active subgroup of SIUC-AA.”

Membership is open to all retired and active Southern Illinois University Carbondale employees, and spouses and partners are also welcome to participate.  The association has 718 current members.

The organization’s mission is to serve active and retired SIU Carbondale employees through education and service to the University and community.  The organization keeps members informed about Illinois legislative and administrative changes in pensions and health insurance.  Organization members volunteer in many areas of the University, and fund scholarships to a number of University students each year.  There is also an active social program of travel, guest speakers, golf outings and dinners available to members.
