Studio Jazz Orchestra, Wind Ensemble to perform

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Studio Jazz Orchestra and the SIUC Wind Ensemble team up for a concert this week to launch the academic year.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29, in Shryock Auditorium.

The Studio Jazz Orchestra takes the stage first to present a series of selections from the early days of jazz to nearly the present, including compositions from Frank Foster, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Sammy Nestico and Neal Hefti.  

The Studio Jazz Orchestra is the elite student jazz ensemble in the School of Music.  The ensemble is under the direction of Dick Kelley. 

After intermission, the SIUC Wind Ensemble has its turn, with selections from David Maslanka, Charles Ives and Frank Ticheli.

The wind ensemble, an active touring ensemble, is under the direction of Christopher Morehouse.
