Students with children invited to family event

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Non-Traditional Student Cookout and Family Carnival welcomes families and single parents to a new year at Southern Illinois University Carbondale with fun activities, food, and the chance to find out just what the University and the community offer them.

The event is set for 3-6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27, at Evergreen Park in the small pavilion area. All students with children are welcome to attend at no cost.  The theme is Wild, Wild West and it’s a time of social networking for parents, games, prizes, and much more.  An adult must accompany children.

Kids will want to bring their bikes to participate in the bicycle rodeo.  Participants can also learn how to square dance at 4 p.m.

A variety of information tables will dispense information about various programs at SIUC and in the region for families and there will also be lots of hands-on activities and giveaways for the children to enjoy.  You could even take home a new bicycle, a helmet or other nice prizes.

Of course, the cookout will feature assorted goodies to eat and there will even be some other surprise activities, say perhaps the chance to reel in a big catch.
